MARKETING MIX: Purling queens Kate and Ulrika get needle fever

Anyone who saw the recent tabloid coverage of Geri Halliwell with knitting needles and put it down to the ex-Spice's general daftness will be taken aback by the fact that knitting is the latest big trend taking over the world.

At least, it is according to the Guild of Master Craftsmen, which is about to launch a bi-monthly magazine called Knitting.

Apparently, Julia Roberts, Kate Moss, Ulrika Johnson and Cameron Diaz are all die-hard knitting fans. Knitting even gives us a quote from Sabrina of Mis-teeq, who says, somewhat obliquely: "Give me knitting needles and some wool and I ain't talking."

What's more - and Mix finds this the weirdest celeb hobby yet - Aussie hard man Russell Crowe swears by it.

There's even a rebel element. Knitting informs us that a group called Cast off, now has 300 UK members who stage 'knit-ins' at places such as London's Savoy hotel - where they were forcibly ejected - and Brighton Beach.

So will knitting take over from yoga and the Atkins diet as the latest celebrity-inspired fad? Mix thinks a Henley Centre study should be commissioned immediately.
