Today’s mystery brand was launched in Britain in 1960, although the
animated jungle character who now seems inextricably linked to it did
not bounce onto these shores until 1986.
He was created by animator Ross Wetzel, famous for his Disney animation
and for the world-famous character who has, for many years, advertised
another brand from the same company. That company, founded more than a
century ago in Battle Creek, Michigan, is the leading name in its field
and has always invested heavily in advertising and promotion.
The chocolate-flavoured Brand X, which competes in the ever-growing
children’s sector of its market, is often imitated but, as the company’s
recently-axed spokeswoman used to tell us, never rivalled because the
company never makes product for anyone else.
The pack we feature here dates back to 1962. Did one like it sit on your
breakfast table 30 years ago? If it looks familiar, fax the name of the
brand through to us on 0171 413 4504. If you’re right, you could win a
bottle of champagne.
Natalie Thurlow of Zenith International wins last week’s fizz for
spotting that our mystery brand was Polo. Congratulations!
