Mark Smith joins Discovery

LONDON - Mark Smith, former vice-president of corporate finance at Reed Elsevier, has joined Discovery Networks International as vice-president of strategy and mergers and acquisitions.

Smith will lead business development opportunities for Discovery's International business, which claims to have revenues of more than $1bn. He will report to Catherine Mullen, senior vice-president, strategy and digital media at Discovery.

At publishing and information business Reed Elsevier, he was most recently development director at Reed Exhibitions. During more than six years at Reed, he  was responsible for mergers and acquisitions activity, including the acquisition of information management business Seisint.

Before joining the media industry, Smith worked in banking for Lehman Brothers and UBS.

Mullen said Discovery's International business was "one of the fastest-growing among the media sector" and Smith's "strong business development skills from both a strategic and investment banking perspective" would be an important addition to Discovery.
