Marie Claire puts Beckham on the cover after 14 years of women

LONDON - Marie Claire is set to break with 14 years of tradition next month, when England football team captain and Manchester United player David Beckham adorns its front cover, becoming the magazine's first male cover star.

Beckham appears on the cover of the June issue, which goes on sale May 3, to support an interview with him written by former Smash Hits editor and 'Pop Idol Extra' presenter Kate Thornton.

Beckham said: "That's what made me want to do it -- because I'm the first man ever to go on the cover. I was like 'Wow!' I was so excited about doing the shoot."

Beckham, who is constantly under the media spotlight, is facing increased scrutiny after he broke a bone in his left foot after a challenge from Argentine Aldo Duscher during Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final victory over Deportivo la Coruna two weeks ago.

English football fans are on tenterhooks as they wait to find out whether he will be fit to play for England's first match of the World Cup against Sweden on June 2.
