LONDON - A consortium of leading retailers are to launch a universal on-pack recycling label to provide customers with standardised information on whether packaging can be recycled.

The scheme, to be overseen by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), will see the introduction of three new labels for packaging: widely recycled, check local recycling, and not currently recycled.

Although not compulsory, all producers of packaged products, including retailers and suppliers, are being encouraged by the BRC to participate. So far Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, M&S and Co-op have all signed up to the scheme. Manufacturers including Britvic, Kelloggs and Premier Foods have also agreed to introduce the labelling.

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) will monitor changes in local authorities' recycling capabilities to determine which labelling category each packaging materials falls into.

‘By standardising the information provided to shoppers, these new recycling labels make it easier for us to know what we can recycle and help us to recycle more.  I applaud the retailing sector for taking this initiative,' said Environment Minister, Jane Kennedy.
