MacKenzie and Emap scoop fresh digital licence

LONDON - The Kelvin MacKenzie-chaired Wireless Group has added to its growing number of digital radio licences with a win in Wales through its joint venture with media group Emap.

The joint venture, TWG-Emap Digital, has won the Swansea local multiplex, which has been awarded to the partnership by the Radio Authority.

The two will use the new capacity to carry TWG's Swansea commercial stations The Wave FM and Swansea Sound AM.

The service, which launches in January 2004, will also carry Emap's Kiss and Smash Hits, and BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.

Kelvin MacKenzie, chairman and chief executive of TWG, said he is "delighted" to win the Swansea multiplex.

"I believe the combination of TWG's heritage brands with Emap's music brand will make a terrific digital line-up. It is also another advance in our firm and committed alignment with the digital future," he said.

TWG, which owns analogue station TalkSPORT, has already won digital multiplexes in Central Scotland and Aberdeen through its 92% stake in digital radio group SwitchDigital.

It also holds 80.5% of the London II multiplex and 22% of the London III multiplex.
