M2M wins £5m planning and buying account for Sunny D

LONDON - Omnicom's M2M has been awarded the media planning and buying duties for this summer's £5m relaunch of soft drink Sunny D as a healthy option, without a pitch.

The appointment extends M2M's relationship with drinks distributor Gerber Juice Company, for which it already handles the £2m media business for Welch's Grape Juice.

Creative for the upcoming marketing push for a new-look Sunny D will be handled by My Agency.

The campaign is designed to reposition the brand as a healthy option, made with high levels of fruit juice and no art-ificial preservatives or flavours.

It follows a tumultuous decade for the brand originally known as Sunny Delight in the UK, which was once the third-most-popular soft drink, behind Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

After launching in April 1998, the orange-coloured drink generated more than £150m in annual sales. However, this first incarnation was high in sugar and flavourings and attracted strong criticism from parent groups for its refrigerated store positioning alongside natural juices.

The brand's reputation suffered a major setback when one of its additives - beta-carotene - was accused of turning a child yellow in December 1999. Since then, the drink's market share has ebbed away, despite changes to its formula. In 2008, Sunny D commanded less than 5% of the market, according to Mintel.

However, Alistair MacCallum, managing director of M2M, believes Sunny D is an "iconic brand" and said to be involved with its relaunch is a "dream brief".

The relaunch includes packaging meant to evoke images of the Californian surf culture.
MacCallum said the new brand is positioned as simply "a juice that kids want to drink and that mums are happy to buy".

The initiative is being led by commercial manager Richard Baragwanath.
