Sharp scooped the award, which was voted for by Marketing readers, in recognition of his role in revitalising the M&S brand. His marketing savvy was a prime factor in helping the firm register a 47% leap in pre-tax profits for the year to 1 April to £747.7m, up from £505.1m. This made M&S the strongest sales performer in the retail sector, despite tough trading conditions.
A record number of votes in the annual poll saw Sharp pip former London 2012 marketer David Magliano and Procter & Gamble UK marketing chief Roisin Donnelly to the top prize.
Confectionery brand Green & Black's scooped the awards' Grand Prix. The judging panel, led by former PepsiCo chief Martin Glenn, agreed that Green & Black's was the stand-out entry. They particularly noted that it proved how marketing can drive a business forward through a visible impact on the growth of the bottom line.
