London papers fail to hit first deadlines

The first day in the much-hyped battle of the London free papers was blighted by distribution problems with both papers failing to meet their deadlines in key audience target areas in the capital.

Coincidentally, both papers splashed with the same story about crocodile hunter Steve Irwin, who was killed by a stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef.
Neither paper was available at 4.30pm in trendy Sloane Square, an area populated by the young high-earning party people coveted by both News International's thelondonpaper and Associated's London Lite. Both were available in the area by 5pm.
At Victoria Station, no distributors from thelondonpaper were spotted until 4.55pm. By contrast, the area was flooded with copies of the London Lite. Some 14 London Lite distributors were counted in contrast to five from thelondonpaper.
News International claims to have 700 distributors handing out 400,000 copies in Zone 1, while Associated has more than 500 merchandisers also giving away 400,000 copies in an expanded area which also takes in parts of Zone 2.
The full launch of thelondonpaper.com also missed its 4.30pm target, but is now online.
