London Lite faces closure as Associated Newspapers begins consultation process

The publisher has entered a period of consultation over the future of the paper. It is a loss-making title and could face closure after the market was considerably altered last month.

News International's thelondonpaper was closed in September, followed a decision by the owners of the London Evening Standard to begin giving the paper away.

The Standard is majority-owned by Alexander Lebedev. Associated Newspaers holds a 25.1% share of the title.

The consultation involves 36 London Lite employees.

Steve Auckland, managing director at Associated Newspapers Free Division, said: 'The latest development in the London afternoon free newspaper space dictates that we look again at the future of London Lite. Despite reaching a large audience with an excellent editorial format, we are concerned about the commercial viability in this highly competitive area.'
