London Cannabis event in hunt for big-brand backer

London's Cannabis Festival is seeking sponsorship from big brands such as Levi-Strauss and Rizla for the first time, as the government considers relaxing laws on possession of the drug.

Organisers of the festival on May 4 have approached several brands including clubbing fashion brand Cyberdog, Rizla, Levi's - which is to launch a range of hemp clothing - and a number of record label and web sites. Brands will be offered sponsorship of two music stages, up to eight dance tents, as well as the festival programme.

Last year the festival had one sponsor, Zydot, a product for cleansing urine prior to drugs tests. Zydot paid £1500 to put stickers on all toilet doors at the festival.

Organiser Johnny Roads said the festival is an opportunity for brands to reach not just the 40,000 people expected to attend, but the millions who will see it on the TV news and in newspapers. "It is a less contentious issue now. Being associated with cannabis is not going to put anyone off buying a brand."
