Lloyds TSB backs European golfers at tournaments

Lloyds TSB is putting its sports sponsorship weight behind golf, following the decision to pull out of its Six Nations Championship's rugby sponsorship earlier this year.

The bank is to sponsor a team of European golfers including UK players Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and Laura Davies. The one-year deal means that all the golfers will carry Lloyds TSB branding on their kit at tournaments. They will also be available for use in corporate events and to front marketing initiatives for the bank.

Lloyds TSB also announced that it is sponsoring the Welsh Rugby Union and the Barbarians rugby team. The latter deal will initially run for a year, but Lloyds TSB said it will probably extend the sponsorship for a further two years.

Lloyds TSB stepped down from its sponsorship of the Six Nations in July after pumping around £35m into the deal over five years. A spokesman said that the tie-up was instrumental in establishing the combined Lloyds TSB brand. He added that the current partnerships are intended to promote individual products.
