Lloyd-Evans named ad director at Dennis

Julian Lloyd-Evans, Dennis' IT and Technology group sales director, has beaten internal and external candidates to become the magazine publisher's first director of advertising.

The role, which covers Dennis' entire UK portfolio of 17 titles and their online brand extensions, is the most senior advertising position within the group.

The news coincided with the appointment of former Loaded editor Derek Harbinson to the editorship of Maxim. The flagship Dennis title has been without an editor since April, when Greg Gutfeld left without another job to go to. Harbinson joins from IPC, where he is deputy editor of Nuts. He was chief sub-editor at Loaded in 1997, when he was promoted to replace James Brown.

Lloyd-Evans will report directly to chief executive James Tye and will sit on the publisher's board.

Dennis previously managed its advertising on a divisional basis, with group advertising directors including Lloyd-Evans heading each section.

The remaining group heads will all now report to Lloyd-Evans.

They are: St John Betteridge, who heads the consumer division, which comprises Dennis' male lifestyle titles such as Maxim, Men's Fitness and Bizarre; Des Flynn, who handles ads for motoring magazines; Dan Reeves, commercial director of The Week, and Jonathan Asfaw, group advertising manager across Digital. Dennis is also recruiting for a new IT and Technology group sales director, a role which includes the Gambling and Digital division - a position Lloyd-Evans said he hoped to fill internally in the coming weeks.

In his new role, he plans to adopt a "unified approach" to trading. He said: "Agencies can expect cross sales deals on print, online and mobile, but we won't be losing the expertise from our specialist teams and divisions."

He added: "I look forward to meeting the challenges of integrating the many talented sales teams at Dennis, bringing new products to market and increasing our external profile with clients and agencies."

Lloyd-Evans joined Dennis in 1996 as sales executive on PC Pro and rose to be appointed sales director of the IT division in 2002. In 2004, this role was expanded to incorporate the technology, Gambling and Digital divisions.

James Tye said: "Julian has already demonstrated his outstanding vision, leadership and energy in his role as group sales director and I have no doubt he will apply the same qualities to this challenging and far broader role."
