Between the Lines: Dru faces new task at TBWA

When Jean-Marie Dru's name emerged as the front-runner to take the top job at Havas, the group seemed set for a fair future. Now Dru has ruled himself out (page 1), Havas' future direction looks rather more bleak. Of course, Vincent Bollore may have a stunning candidate waiting in the wings, but no new names of Dru's stature have emerged so far.

Cannes week was probably a pretty bad time to try to tempt Dru out of his TBWA comfort zone. Surrounded by TBWA colleagues and clients, most of whom were piling on the emotional pressure to him to stay, Dru was exposed to the full strength of TBWA's loyalty and support. Had he been sitting alone in his Parisian office, the lure of the status and salary attached to the Havas role might have proved overwhelming.

But at TBWA, at least two executives have spent the past week or so contemplating the possibility of ascending to Dru's chair; the news that he will be staying put will inevitably lead to some frustration and Dru would do well, now, to find new ways of making room for senior talent to progress.
