Potter: in-depth technical approach

Independent publisher Lincombe Publishing, set up by ex-Reed Elsevier publisher Sandy Howard, has launched a new magazine entitled The Sportswoman.

According to editor Julie Potter, the title aims to provide an in-depth technical look at women's sport, examining issues such as training
schedules, kit testing and health. With an initial print run of 15,000, The Sportswoman will have a cover price of £3 and will be published on a monthly basis. Potter said: "We hope to fill a gap in the media market for women's sport which, as yet, due to the heavy demands
of men's sport, and in particular football, remains a small
paragraph in the main media outlets.

"Many sportswomen rely on their federations or clubs for information about their own sports and remain largely uninformed about the women's sports world in general.

"We aim to turn that around."

The first issue, due on newsstands in August, will include an interview with Olympic Gold winner Denise Lewis. Howard commented: "This magazine is a carefully researched title which we believe fulfills a great need in the market.

"Advertisers have, so far, been keen to explore a market which largely remains untapped by traditional, glossy titles and the news media."

Meanwhile, Condé Nast's contract publishing department is to produce a customer magazine for the Savoy hotel group. With a handbag-sized format similar to the group's new women's title Glamour, the mag will be published three times a year and distributed within Savoy hotels and mailed to the group's regular overseas guests.
