Liberals criticise Iraq spending in $15m anti-Bush ads

NEW YORK - A liberal political group in the US is taking an early shot in the upcoming election battle with a new anti-Bush advertising campaign running in five crucial states.

is running the ads in Florida, Ohio, Missouri, Nevada and West Virginia as part of a planned $15m spend in the coming months.

The campaign breaks today and criticises President George W Bush for spending $87bn in Iraq, asking: "Where's his plan for taking care of America?"

According to reports, the ads have been tested in Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, where support for President Bush dropped from 44% to 40% following their screening. But with the election not being held until November next year, it remains to be seen if anti-Bush campaigners can keep up the momentum.

Moveon.org has some high-profile supporters and in October it announced a competition for budding advertising directors to submit a 30-second film fitting the title "Bush in 30 seconds", which could win the chance to be run at a later date.

The competition is being judged by celebrities including the Oscar-winning comedian and documentary maker Michael Moore, the musician Moby and the actor Jack Black.
