Leo Burnett beat off competition from Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy to win the account, after incumbent agency KLP Euro RSCG declined to compete for the business.
Its decision to withdraw follows sister agency Euro RSCG London winning the creative account for rival wine brand Mateus Rose in March.
Freixenet exports to more than 140 countries and is best known for its sparkling wines, but also produces red and white wines under its Ash Tree Estate brand.
Leo Burnett will initially work on Ash Tree Estate and the sparkling Cava wines, with a brief to relaunch them.
Robin Campbell, marketing and sales director at Freixenet, said: "Leo Burnett's pitch idea was brilliant and we look forward to putting its ideas into effect."
Bruce Haines, group chief executive of Leo Burnett, said: "The growth potential for Freixenet is very exciting -- it's a fascinating company."
