J. Walter Thompson and Leagas Delaney have made redundancies at
their London offices.
There are 19 job losses at JWT while Leagas Delaney is laying off eight
staff.
JWT announced its redundancies last week along with cuts across the
business, but the majority are in the creative department. The agencies'
cutbacks have been forced by the downturn in the economy. It is also
facing large overheads from an impending move to Knightsbridge. The
losses were announced by Simon Bolton, JWT's chief executive.
Those made redundant by JWT include the creatives Siggi Halling and
Davis Mackersey, responsible for the agency's "dino time" spot for
Dairylea Dunkers.
Leagas Delaney's staff cuts follow the collapse of a proposed takeover
by the Canadian group Envoy. The agency also lost most of its Barclays
account to Bartle Bogle Hegarty in August. The art director, Michelle
Taylor, and the copywriter, Julie Oakley, who won a silver at ±±¾©Èü³µpk10's
Poster Awards for their "what's more painful?" Harrods work, were among
those made redundant.
Cuts at JWT and Leagas Delaney follow job losses at Abbott Mead Vickers
BBDO and M&C Saatchi earlier this month. AMV, an agency which did not
make staff cuts in the downturn of the early 90s, laid off 18 people,
many from support services departments, and M&C has also made cutbacks
in light of the economic situation.
HHCL & Partners, hit by recent account losses, including Egg and
Amazon.com, has also made redundancies.
