Leagas Delaney's creative directors, Will Farquhar and Ian Ducker,
the pair behind the agency's much vaunted "Perfect Day" spot for the
BBC, are quitting the agency to go freelance after almost a decade.
Farquhar and Ducker said they are keen to get back to working on big
accounts, and are in discussions with a number of agencies about
freelance opportunities. The pair will continue to work on some of
Leagas Delaney's business, but claim that various changes and account
losses were factors in their departure.
"We're taking the plunge now because the agency is changing, and the
entire agency landscape is changing too," Ducker said. "There are more
opportunities for teams like us to tap in on individual projects, and we
want to get back to working on big, creative accounts."
"This is the right move for us from both a business and personal point
of view," Ducker added, admitting that the loss of Leagas Delaney's
flagship Adidas account to TBWA in December had been a decisive
blow.
Farquhar and Ducker have worked together as copywriter and art director
respectively for 21 years. Starting at BMP in 1980, they stayed at the
agency for nine years before moving to CDP. They were at Grey before
moving to Leagas Delaney in 1993.
Their departure means Rob Burleigh and David Beverley, with whom they
previously shared the creative director role, now take charge of the
department.
Leagas Delaney's chief executive, Tim Delaney, said: "I have absolute
faith that Rob and Dave will continue the high standards in the creative
department. Will and Ian are one of the best TV teams in Europe and I'm
glad we will continue to call on their talents."
With Burleigh and Beverley, they were promoted to manage the day-to-day
running of the creative department in October 2000, as part of a
restructure which saw Delaney and the former chairman, Bruce Haines,
swapping roles, and the promotion of Justin Baraimian and Colin Clarke
to become joint managing directors.
