Laura Ashley web operation records profit

Women's retailer Laura Ashley has reported that its online operation is making a profit a year after its launch.

A spokeswoman for the fashion and home-furnishing company revealed that the web site (www.lauraashley.com) has beaten its target of achieving online sales of 拢1 million in its first year.

An average customer transaction on the site is worth about 拢110. Laura Ashley now has 43,000 registered online users, up from 26,000 in May.

In its financial results for the 26 weeks to 27 July, Laura Ashley said its mail-order arm, which includes its e-commerce operation, had experienced sales growth of 40 per cent compared with the same period last year. According to the retailer, home furnishings are proving particularly popular online.

Laura Ashley unveiled the 拢200,000 site last October.
