Lastminute's Hoberman leads $11m investment in WAYN

LONDON - Brent Hoberman, co-founder of budget travel website Lastminute.com, is leading an $11m (£5.7m) investment in the relaunch of WAYN.com, a social networking website aimed at travellers wanting to swap information on holiday destinations.

Hoberman, who will join as non-executive chairman of WAYN in January, has formed the partnership with various travel companies including: Esprit Capital Partners; Adrian Critchlow and Andy Phillips, co-founders of Active Hotels; David Soskin and Hugo Burge of Cheapflights; and Constant Tedder, co-founder and managing director of Jagex.

WAYN, which stands for Where Are You Now, originally launched in 2002, and attracted a limited amount of interest. Since relaunching in March this year, it has steadily built its subscription database, claiming that 650,000 users registered last month alone.

It now has a subscription base totalling 7m across 220 countries, and claims to attract 35,000 new members every day.

The company said it planned to use the capital to fund new revenue streams, expand its international offices, improve its IT technology, develop a tailored trip planner and enhance its rich media content.

Peter Ward, co-founder of WAYN, said: "Back in 2002 we recognised the huge potential for a travel community network. Travel captures the imagination and meeting people from different places is something that most of us really enjoy doing."

Hoberman added: "By sharing tips and introductions with likeminded travellers, WAYN members can get more out of their leisure time. The WAYN brand has massive growth potential."
