The 8.2 metre-high rugby ball embarked on its journey at the Tilbury Docks yesterday afternoon (21 May). It travelled 25 miles up the river to Tower Bridge, before being moored at Butler’s Wharf.
The Land Rover Rugby World Cup 2015 Defender was unveiled at dawn, when Land Rover ambassador and Rugby World Cup 2003 winner Lewis Moody drove it out of the giant ball.
Moody, along with his Rugby World Cup 2003 captain and fellow Land Rover ambassador, Martin Johnson, placed the Webb Ellis Cup trophy in the vehicle’s specialised integrated cabinet.
The cabinet will be used to display the trophy as the car travels around the UK and Ireland during the 100-day tour. It has been constructed in accordance with the trophy’s specific measurements, and it features remote locking, lighting and temperature control which is managed via an app operated by the driver.
The Defender will also be used to deliver the trophy to Twickenham Stadium for the World Cup opening ceremony on 18 September.
