Labour loses media coverage as Tories and Lib Dems on the rise

LONDON - Labour has lost its share of 'the media voice' for the third consecutive week, dropping from 57% of election-related media coverage to 54% while the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats were up.

According to Factiva Insight's Media Monitor report, the Conservative Party increased its coverage from 28% to 30% while the Liberal Democrats saw coverage increase from 13% to 14%, although neither party could come anywhere near beating Labour's controlling share.

Top issues during the third week of campaigning were education, health and crime, dominating 16%, 15% and 12% of media mentions in national and local UK media respectively.

However, that could change in the next set of figures following the strong showing of stories about the war in Iraq over the last two days.

Labour soared ahead of the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in terms of coverage of education and health, with 56% for both compared with the Tories 27% and 31% and the Lib Dems 17% and 13% respectively.

There was only a three percentage point difference in the Labour and Conservative coverage of immigration. Labour narrowly won with 46% while the Tories were hot on their heels with 43%.

The Media Monitor report tracks the key issues and parties in the UK General Election daily coverage.

Interestingly, despite being dubbed the most "boring election", mentions of the Iraq war have sunk to a low of 8%.
