Labour activates with controversial pink bus

Political party Labour has unveiled a pink 16-seater bus to activate its Woman to Woman campaign ahead of the General Election on 7 May.

The vehicle is set to visit more than 70 constituencies before the election. Deputy leader Harriet Harman is at the forefront of the experiential campaign, and said the touring bus would demonstrate that politics is not just a "men-only activity".

Women from across the Labour team will board the bus for a tour of the country to discuss with females what they want from Government, as well as highlighting Labour’s commitment to women's rights and issues. Targeted locations include the school gates, workplaces, shopping centres, universities, town centres and on the doorstep.

The colour choice of the vehicle has come under fire from critics, with many branding it is as patronising and gender-stereotyping. Conservative MP Caroline Dinenage said: "Getting Harriet Harman to drive around the country in a pink van to try and attract the female vote is as patronising as it gets. This is clearly just another divisive gimmick that the electorate will see through."

Labour has stood by its aesthetic decision, with Harman commenting that pink is a "One Nation Labour colour". In a media briefing yesterday afternoon she said: "We wanted to be visible…to mark it out, to be different. We wanted it to look conspicuous and therefore a white van was not going to do the job."

Gloria De Piero, Labour’s women’s and equalities spokesman, added that the bus is the same colour of the party’s backdrop at its 2014 autumn conference.
