Kraft's Kenco beats Nestle to launch of fair trade coffee

LONDON - Kraft Foods has stolen a march on rival Nestle with the launch of a fair trade coffee range under its Kenco brand. Nestle has yet to launch a fair trade coffee for its Nescafe brand, despite revealing its plans two months ago.

Kraft's brand, Kenco Sustainable Development, will comprise two items: a three-pint filter pack and one-kilo espresso bean pack.

Kraft will introduce the products later this month to 'away-from-home' consumers in restaurants, hotels, coffee shops and vending machines.

Both products will carry an eco-label through a link with sustainable agriculture organisation Rainforest Alliance, which guarantees that the beans are from certified farms.

Kraft is also reformulating its flagship brands -- Maxwell House and Kenco Really Smooth -- so that they contain at least 5% certified beans. The main brands will not feature an eco-label.

Kraft will consider developing products to be sold in supermarkets after separate trials.
