Kit Kat prepares cheesecake bar to prop up sales

Nestle Rowntree is researching unusual flavours, including Lemon Cheesecake, in a bid to revitalise its flagging Kit Kat bar.

Kit Kat sales have dropped by 5.4% to £116m over the past year, while Kit Kat Chunky sales have plummeted 18% to £50.5m.

Lemon Cheesecake Kit Kat is already sold in Germany and Japan. This may be imported to the UK as a limited edition to achieve a short-term sales boost.

Nestle Rowntree managing director Chris White confirmed that the company was looking to launch a range of flavours over the next year, but said that it was too early to say which would be the first to market.

Other flavours being researched are liquorice, saffron, cumin, masala and passion fruit. White denied that the company is specifically targeting Asian or Indian consumers with the flavours. "We're doing this because we want to sell more, make more money and grow market share," he said.
