According to a report in the Sunday Times, the spot is one of the most expensive yet made, costing around £6m to produce. It is due to be screened in cinemas later this year.
In the ad, Oscar-winning actress Kidman plays a star who is besieged by paparazzi. She enters a building and climbs a staircase where she meets the Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro, who appeared in 'Love Actually'. The pair kiss and disappear into a room before Kidman reappears to greet her fans with a shot of her wearing a pendant saying "No. 5".
The ad has variously been compared with 'Moulin Rouge' and 'La Dolce Vita', with Kidman seen in the spot as both a Princess Diana and a Marilyn Monroe-type figure. Monroe once famously told an interviewer that the only thing she wore to bed was Chanel No. 5.
Kidman, who earned £10m for appearing in her latest film 'Cold Mountain', is not the first highly paid actress to make some pocket money through appearing in ads. Madonna recently starred in a spot with Missy Elliott promoting Gap jeans and 'Friends' star Jennifer Aniston has done ads for L'Oreal. Jennifer Lopez has gone one step further, releasing her own fragrances, Glow and Still Jennifer Lopez.
