Kerrang! editor takes on Q as Eccleston moves over

LONDON - Danny Eccleston is handing over the editorship of Emap Performance's music bible Q magazine to Kerrang! editor Paul Rees, as he moves over to work on a series of music magazine launches.

Eccleston has overseen a redesign of Q since he took over as editor in August 2001. He has also been credited with achieving the title's biggest unpromoted circulation rise in 18 months, despite dropping 10.2% period on period to 180,168 -- a year-on-year decline of 10% in the last set of ABCs.

However, this achievement will no doubt be overshadowed by last week's news that Emap Consumer Media is having to resubmit circulation figures for 14 of its titles after mistakenly including bulk magazine sales in its figures.

Despite this, Q is still expected to see a rise in the next set of ABCs for the July to December period, due in February.

Emap Performance managing director of rock Dave Henderson said: "Danny has done a fantastic job on Q, turning the title around and busting our forecasted sales. We're very excited about his new idea and have decided to give him the creative muscle to make it happen."

Eccleston will be joined working on the new launches by former Wallpaper art director Paul Kurzeja, who joined Emap as group art director last week. As well as creating the identity of new launches, he will be charged with sharpening the images of Emap's existing titles such as Mojo, Q and Kerrang!.

Kerrang! deputy editor Jason Arnopp moves up to the post of acting editor of the rock title, which has seen its circulation jump 60% in the last year, until a new editor is appointed.

Kerrang!, which was popular in the 80s when bands such as Whitesnake, Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses topped the charts, has enjoyed a renaissance in the last year after shifting its editorial to cover the new rock genre, nu metal.

Kerrang!'s pages now feature articles on bands such as Puddle of Mudd, Korn and Slipknot. As a result, it has overtaken IPC Media's rival weekly the NME in the circulation war.

Rees is also taking Kerrang! managing editor Phil Alexander to Q with him.

Henderson said: "Paul's contribution to Kerrang!'s success has been enormous. His enthusiasm and vision for Q is well known and, put into practice, we're sure that it will continue the title's growth."
