Vodafone has handed J. Walter Thompson a key slice of European
business, in a move that gives the network a coveted place on the global
roster behind Wieden & Kennedy.
According to high-level sources, JWT has been engaged to do
above-the-line work for Vodafone outside the UK and won the account in
Portugal last December. The work will be handled out of the agency's
German office.
The project that JWT has been working on concerns Vodafone's business
sector, not the consumer task. Vodafone refused to comment.
In November, Vodafone called a review with the intention of reassessing
its existing roster of agencies internationally and appointing a single
global network. The company will be merging all the Vodafone brands into
its main brand by the middle of this year. This will mean that Vodafone
networks in Spain, Egypt and Portugal, for example, will be renamed
under the global Vodafone brand and lose their local names.
The review will not affect W&K's status as the agency of record for
Vodafone.
