Jones, Sorrell, Murphy and Ahmed make Sunday Times list of 500 influencers

David Jones, the former chief executive of Havas group, has been included in The Sunday Times' list of most-influential Britons, alongside Sir Martin Sorrell, James Murphy and Ajaz Ahmed.

Jones features in the list in the advertising category and is cited as "the youngest chief executive of a global network". He left Havas this month to launch a new tech start-up.

Sorrell is credited with keeping the UK ad industry "independent and animated", while Ajaz Ahmed, the chief executive of the WPP-owned digital agency AKQA, is listed for identifying "how the internet would sculpt advertising".

Others on the advertising list include: Ben Fennell, the chief executive of Bartle Bogle Hegarty; Murphy, the chief executive at Adam & Eve/DDB; and Cilla Snowball, the group chief executive of Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO.

Lindsey Clay, the chief executive of Thinkbox, is the second of only two women listed in the advertising category.

Debrett's, the company known for its guide to the aristocracy and etiquette, worked in association with The Sunday Times to compile the list of the most influential people, which is based on "exhaustive research".

Also in the Top 500, listed in the broadcasting category are: Adam Crozier, ITV's chief executive; Richard Desmond, Channel 5's chairman; Lord Patten, the BBC Trust’s chairman; and Lord Hall, the BBC director general.

Elisabeth Murdoch, the founder and chairman of Shine, which she sold to News Corporation in 2011, in also in the list, as is David Abraham, the Channel 4 chief executive and Jeremy Darroch, the BSkyB chief executive.

On the client-side, Katie Vanneck-Smith, News UK's chief marketing officer, makes the list for "masterminding the company's paid content strategy". David Pemsel, the Guardian's recently promoted deputy chief executive, is also featured.

Other marketers include: Craig Inglis, the marketing director at John Lewis; Keith Weed, the chief marketing officer at Unilever, and Christian Woolfenden, the marketing director and "boundary-pusher" at Paddy Power.
