Johnston Press half-year profits rise 36%

LONDON - Johnston Press reported a 36% leap in pre-tax profits for the half year to June 30 to £35.2m compared with £25.9m during the same six months in 1999.

The publisher of regional newspapers said its figures were helped by a growth in advertising revenue. This is believed to have been boosted by the purchase of publisher Portsmouth & Sunderland last year.

Turnover for the period rose to £147.5m from £103.1m last year.

Johnston is currently involved in a battle against US newspaper publisher Gannett in the bidding for Regional Independent Media, another UK regional publisher.
