Johnston Press has announced a 14% rise in its pre-tax profits and a 3.2% like-for-like growth in ad revenue, despite the recent advertising slowdown. Recording a pre-tax profit of £43m, the company, the fourth largest regional newspaper publisher in the UK, appears to have avoided the slump which has hit some of its competitors, such as Trinity Mirror. Chief executive Tim Bowdler said: "We hope to make further progress despite the gloomy predictions for the economy. "We will continue to exercise tight control over costs through controlling usage such as free distribution, page sizes and improving waste levels."
