Johnny Rotten says bollocks to MP3

Questioning authority and breaking social taboos are all in a day's work for former Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten. However, the free music format MP3 appears a shade too anarchistic, even for the man who spit on his own audiences.

Cornered by Revolution at an event for his show on Internet radio site eYada.com, Rotten said he is not happy that his Sex Pistols and PIL (Public Image Limited) bands' catalog of songs are widely available for download on the internet, completely free.

"I don't like MP3," he said. "I'm not receiving any profit from people who download my songs. The only people making money off of my music is MP3 (web sites). The audio quality is terrible as well. It's a complete con. The only people who will ever make any money off downloadable music will be people like Alanis Morissette, whose songs are pushed so hard by record companies."

eYada.com has added the former Sex Pistol into its growing stable of talk talent. The site's only rule: no topic or subject is off limits.

Without FCC restrictions, eYada.com's shows have the freedom to talk about subjects that standard radio programs might be nervous in broaching and it's exactly their no holds barred approach to talk radio that they think will attract listeners. "Johnny's like a kid in a candy store," said Carol Klenfner, a spokeswoman for eYada.com. "He still can't believe that he can say anything he wants. John's very excited about internet radio and the freedom it will give him."

Rotten's two-month old talk show, which airs Saturdays from 4:00-8:00 pm (Eastern), is accessed by 170,000 visitors weekly at the site. "Anybody who has to sit at their computer during the day can tune into an eYada program and listen to it as they work and if you miss a program you can listen to it on archive," said Robert Meyrowitz, CEO of eYada.com.
