
Myers, who left GMG Radio last year to travel the world, will take up the senior post at the Academy in April 2011. His reponsibilities will include chairing the committees for The Radio Festival and The Radio Academy’s annual awards.
Myers said: "When I stepped down from GMG Radio last year on my fiftieth birthday, I wanted to travel the world and have a rest. Having done that, I now want to do something positive and give something back to UK radio.
"This role gives me a great opportunity to lead the Academy through some very important changes and ensure all sides of the radio sector come together for an exciting future."
Myers started his career at the BBC in Cumbria before launching Century Radio in 1994. In 1999, he founded GMG Radio as part of Guardian Media Group and subsequently launched the Real, Smooth and Rock brands.
Last year, , and in 2007 he was awarded a Fellowship from The Radio Academy for his services to the industry.
