Job losses at Beeb.com

The BBC's shopping site Beeb.com has axed half of its 80 staff and its chief executive Julian Turner has stepped down.

BBC Worldwide said the job losses, which follow a recent redesign of the site, are part of an on-going restructure.

The first phase was completed in October when the site was relaunched, the final phase will be completed this April.

Staff will be consulted over the next few weeks to determine where the cuts will be made.

Turner said this week: "My decision to resign, coupled with the removal of a good deal of other costs, is a reflection of the execution and completion of the vision I had for the site when I took over.

"These changes in cost structure will give Beeb.com the time to prove itself as the UK's leading shopping portal.

"I have moved Beeb.com forward since taking over in September. As a result, the company now operates against a dramatically more efficient business model, having made a significant investment in the technology platform to enable a smooth transition to a lower cost base."

Chief operating officer Kym Niblock will handle the day-to-day operation of the business. BBC Worldwide chief executive Rupert Gavin will take over as executive chairman and will assume the strategic responsibilities previously held by  Turner.
