Jay McGuiness win pushes Strictly to 11.9m

Jay McGuiness, a former member of The Wanted, helped the BBC pull in a peak of 11.9 million viewers for the Strictly Come Dancing final on Saturday night.

The first part of the final of the dancing show, which aired between 6.35pm and 8pm, had an average audience of 11 million, a 50.1 per cent share of the people watching TV at the time.

The results were announced in a second installment later that evening between 9pm and 10.10pm, which also pulled in an average of 11 million viewers, a 48.4 per cent share of the people watching TV. The second show reached an audience peak of 11.7 million viewers.

Last year’s Strictly Come Dancing final had an average audience of 10.2 million.

McGuiness was crowned winner after beating competition from Kellie Bright, the EastEnders actress, Katie Derham, the news presenter, and Georgia May Foote, the Coronation Street star.

The finale for the 13th series beat The X Factor final last week which attracted an average of 8.2 million people between 8pm and 10.05pm, a 33.9 per cent share of the total viewing.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey aired on ITV from 6.35pm until 9.45pm, and attracted an average of 2 million people, a 9.2 per cent share of the audience.

Between 9.45pm and 10.50pm The Jonathan Ross Show pulled in 1.5 million viewers to ITV, a 7.3 per cent share of the audience.
