January proves successful for national dailies

LONDON - After a poor month in December, national newspapers have bounced back in January, with The Independent, The Sun and The Guardian all reporting impressive circulation rises, according to the latest ABCs.

The Independent shed its December blues with a circulation rise of 9.74% month on month to 250,641 copies in January. Its six-month average remains down however by 5.83% to 240,595 copies.

The Guardian also experienced a dramatic increase in sales from December to January and was up by 7.06% month on month to 378,394 copies. However its six-month average was down 4.21% year on year to 362,299 copies.

Its quality sector rival The Times, which had a two-week children's DVD giveaway, also performed well during January. Its circulation was up by 2.99% month on month to 633,718 copies but its six-month average was down by 3.78% to 637,595 copies.

The Daily Telegraph's circulation rose by 1.90% to 890,086 copies in January and its six-month average was down by just 1.91% year on year to 884,542 copies.

Pearson's Financial Times, which raised its cover price by 20p to £1.50 during January, only managed a minor 0.73% rise in January to 452,448 copies. However its six-month average is up by 2.52% to 443,602 copies, which is the only year-on-year rise out of all the national newspapers.

News International's The Sun, which had an offer of two free low energy lightbulbs one Saturday, shot back up above its 3m benchmark during January. Its circulation rose by 7.51% to 3,209,776 copies and its six-month average was down by only 0.50% to 3,127,901 copies.

Its red-top rival, the Daily Mirror, which had an "Events that shook the world" DVDs giveaway during January, was up by 1.23% from December to 1,512,559 copies. But its six-month average was down 3.93% year on year to 1,538,542 copies.

The Daily Star was the only national newspaper to report a circulation dip during January. Its circulation fell by 0.48% to 722,969 copies, while its six-month average was down 1.64% to 770,359 copies.

The Daily Mail, which offered both free vitamins and two free lightbulbs on its front page during the month, recorded a rise of just 0.13% from December to 2,313,908 copies. Its six-month average is down 0.66% to 2,336,746 copies.
