Jaguar backs Coventry City stadium in £7m deal

Jaguar is ploughing £7m into a sponsorship deal that gives the car manufacturer naming rights to Coventry's new 32,000-seat sports and events stadium.

The £113m state-of-the-art arena will be completed by August 2005, when it will become home to Coventry City football club. The stadium will be called the Jaguar Arena for a 10-year period, giving the marque a high-profile presence in the city where its cars are manufactured.

Jaguar beat off competition from a number of suitors, including a major banking group, a mobile phone company and an energy supplier.

As well as football matches, the arena will host other sports, corporate events and performing arts. The stadium will also feature an 8000-capacity exhibition and events hall and a 1000-seat banqueting suite.

The stadium is owned by Coventry Council. Once the arena is completed, a hotel and Britain's biggest casino will be built on the site.

The construction spells the end of Coventry City's 105-year residency at the Highfield Road ground.
