ITV1 crime drama pulls in 6m viewers to win primetime slot

LONDON - ITV1 drama 'Trial and Retribution' bounced back from losing a million viewers last week, as it comfortably won its primetime slot last night with 6.1m viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The Lynda La Plante crime drama pulled in a 26% share of the audience, in the third instalment of a nine-part series.

In the same 9pm time slot, BBC One's four-part drama 'Fairytales' ended on a whimper, with just 2.5m viewers and a 10.7% share, well below last week's audience of 3.4m viewers.

Channel 4 scored a ratings hit at 9pm with a 'Cutting Edge' documentary called 'Scams, Fiddles and Honest Claims', in which the programme makers were granted unprecedented access to the fraud team at the heart of the biggest insurance company in Britain, Norwich Union.

The observational documentary was watched by 3.2m viewers and a 13.7% share, growing to 3.5m viewers and a 15.1% share with Channel 4+1.

Earlier in the evening, a double episode of cookery series 'Jamie at Home' drew 2m viewers and an 8.2% share at 8pm, which rose to 2.2m viewers and an 8.9% share on Channel 4+1.

The second episode attracted 2.1m viewers and an 8.5% share. Including Channel 4 +1, the audience grew to 2.4m viewers and a 9.6% share.

The latest twist in Britney Spears' bizarre and very public life helped boost the audience for 'News at Ten' to 3.4m viewers and a 17.1% share; a much-needed rise above recent audiences, which have been below the 3m mark.

The BBC's flagship news show 'BBC News' won the 10pm slot with 4.4m viewers and a 21.8% share.
