ITV to show first two England games of World Cup

LONDON - ITV will show the first two England games of the 2010 World Cup in June as well as the opening game between host nation South Africa and Mexico on 11 June.

Under a deal with the BBC ITV will show the England vs USA game at 7.30pm on Saturday 12 June as well as England's game against Algeria at 7.30pm on Friday 18 June.

BBC One will show England's final group game against Slovenia at 3pm on Wednesday 23 June.

In the knock-out stages of the tournament the BBC will have the first choice of games in the first two rounds, the last 16 and the quarter finals.

If England reaches the semi-final the game will be shown by both ITV and the BBC and both broadcasters will show the World Cup final live. ITV will show the third and fourth place play-off.

Niall Sloane, controller of sport at ITV, said: "ITV is delighted that it will kick off coverage of this summer's World Cup and that England's two opening games will be shown live on ITV1 in peak time."

Sloane added: "There is no bigger event on UK television or online than the World Cup and ITV will be at the heart of the action from the first kick through to the final whistle."

ITV and the BBC will simulcast the same games they broadcast on their TV channels on their respective websites.

A spokesman for the broadcasters said plans for highlights programming and online highlights will be announced in due course.
