ITV and Setanta win FA digital deal

ITV and Setanta Sports have won a host of new football digital rights, along with the exclusive broadcast rights to the FA Cup and England matches.

The contract includes new online and mobile arrangements that did not form part of the previous deal with the BBC and Sky.

The agreement with ITV means fans will be able to access goal clips from FA Cup and England matches via their mobile and internet connections.

Meanwhile, Irish broadcaster Setanta Sports will offer an extended highlights video-on-demand service for the matches.

The deal runs from August 2008 to July 2012 and is expected to generate £425m for the FA Cup overall.

This is a 42% increase on the current deal with the BBC and Sky, worth £300m, which expires in July 2008.

ITV has also secured the web rights for the UEFA Champions League. All games are streamed live online, alongside the ITV1 and ITV4 match coverage, with users paying either a per-use fee or an annual subscription.

The broadcaster is offering a package for mobile phones through the ITV mobile portal, with the opportunity to watch 30-second clips of the goals and post-match video highlights.
