ITV rivals BBC with ice-skating take on Come Dancing

LONDON – ITV is to rival the BBC with an ice-skating version of 'Strictly Come Dancing', fronted by former UK ice-skating champions Torvill and Dean.

'Stars on Thin Ice' will put celebrities through their paces as would-be professional skaters. Each week, one of the celebrities is voted off the show depending on how well they perform.

ITV has yet to set a broadcast date, but has said 'Stars on Thin Ice' could become a regular fixture.

The BBC announced on Tuesday it was to launch a Christmas special spin-off called 'Strictly Come Dancing on Ice' featuring former footballer Paul Gascoigne.

'Strictly Come Dancing' has been a big success story for the BBC, regularly beating ITV and Simon Cowell's 'X Factor' in the coveted Saturday early-evening slot.
