ITV partners reach agreement with UTV

LONDON - Carlton and Granada have reached a financial settlement with Ulster Television, operator of the ITV franchise in Northern Ireland, over the use of the ITV brand for their joint-venture digital TV platform ITV Digital.

The row broke out last spring when Carlton and Granada -- ITV's two biggest companies -- announced the rebranding of their troubled digital terrestrial TV service from ONdigital to ITV Digital, so as to take in the better-known ITV name.

However, the smaller ITV companies, UTV, SMG and Channel Television, demanded compensation from Carlton and Granada over the use of the ITV brand name.

UTV threatened to sue Carlton and Granada in August if a settlement was not reached.

The agreement with UTV will now see ITV2 broadcast in the province.

When the row broke out, UTV, SMG and Channel refused to carry promotions for ITV Digital, which was relaunched in July with the highly successful "Monkey" campaign, created by Mother and also featuring the chubby comedian Johnny Vegas.
