ITV disposes of assets with £3m Carlton Books sale

LONDON – ITV has sold its publishing arm, Carlton Books, to a management buyout team as it begins to dispose of several non-core assets, believed to be worth up to £550m.

Other businesses expected to be sold include post-production unit The Moving Picture Company, cinema business Carton Screen Advertising and a stake in SMG, which owns the Grampian and Scottish Television ITV franchises.

ITV will also sell its 10% stake in Liverpool Football Club and its 5% stake in Arsenal. The stakes are valued at £18m, a fraction of the amount ITV paid for them.

Cartlon Books been making losses of more than £1m a year. It has 55 members of staff and publishes titles relating to football and ITV shows. The business was sold for an estimated £3m.

The merger of Carton and Granada to form a more streamlined ITV earlier this year provoked speculation that its non-core assets would eventually be sold.

Carlton Screen Advertising could be worth as much as £66m but the big prize will be ITV's 5% stake in French multimedia group Thomson, which is valued at £185m.
