ITV Digital makes last-ditch survival offer

LONDON - ITV Digital is reported to be considering increasing its offer to the Football League to between £70m and £90m, as well as giving the rights to matches back to clubs.

It is also reported that advisers for ITV Digital will try to renegotiate deals with contractors, including BSkyB and the BBC.

If these attempts at reducing ITV Digital's costs fail, the service could be closed within 14 days, with Deloitte & Touche, now advising the company while it is in administration, looking at how it could sell off its assets. Its digital TV licence would revert back to the Independent Television Commission.

Talks are continuing with the Football League, which is trying to force ITV Digital, owned by Carlton Communications and Granada, to honour its £315m football rights deal. ITV Digital still owes the Football League £178m, but has offered to pay only £50m.

The Football League has countered by threatening to sue for £500m, saying that non-payment could lead to the collapse of dozens of lower-division clubs.

It is reported, however, that the chairmen of some of the clubs affected were moving closer to renegotiating the deal.
