ITV delivers upbeat sales pitch to buyers

ITV Sales managing director Gary Digby has told TV buyers that revamping the broadcaster's schedule has proved as difficult as "turning around a supertanker".

However, Digby was upbeat, predicting that ITV's fortunes would improve in 2007 as changes under director of television Simon Shaps, who joined the network a year ago, took effect.
"There is a lot more confidence about the shows we're commis¬sioning," Digby said. "There are a lot of shows that have been discontinued and there's a lot more shows that are going to be discontinued.
"It's been a bit like turning around a great big supertanker, but there's a  different feel to the schedule in 2007."
Digby and Paul Jackson, ITV's director of entertainment and comedy, were speaking at an "upfront" presentation previewing next year's programming to planners and buyers at Starcom group.
Digby and Jackson told of plans to can under-performing formats, such as Stars In Their Eyes, and end ITV's reliance on soaps and films.
The misfiring reality show Love Island is set to be relegated to ITV2.
The new shows on ITV1 include two new formats from X-Factor judge Simon Cowell, including one tentatively named By Royal Command, which will give contestants the chance to compete to appear at the Royal Variety Performance.
However, Jackson revealed that ITV's £120m purchase, Friends Reunited, is unlikely to result in a major television spin-off, despite pressure from the chief executive of ITV Consumer Jeff Henry.
Jackson said: "I'm not sure what you can do with Friends Reunited. To be honest, we get a lot of pressure from Jeff Henry and co."
Digby said ITV had been consistently beating its rivals across the autumn peak-time ratings battle.
He also hinted that major movie deals, such as the one with Universal Pictures that runs out in 2008, would not be pursued in future.
ITV also admitted at the presentation that it was not satisfied with the performance of its men's digital channel ITV4, which would be revamped for next year.
