ITV chief Prebble to resign in the aftermath of ITV Digital disaster

LONDON - Stuart Prebble, ITV’s chief executive, will fall on his sword today, following the collapse of the broadcaster’s digital ambitions.

Marketing magazine has learned that Prebble, who was also chief executive of the now-defunct ITV Digital, has already handed in his resignation to ITV shareholders Granada and Carlton Communications.

He is expected to be replaced, on an interim basis, by Mick Desmond, chairman of Granada Broadcasting and Enterprises, and Clive Jones, chief executive of Carlton TV. This move will pave the way for a merger of two shareholders over the next 12 months into a single ITV.

A former BBC journalist and then ITV presenter, Prebble rose up through Granada’s ranks to become chief executive of what was then ONdigital in July 1999, taking over from Stephen Grabiner.

He was made chief executive of the whole of ITV a year ago, and rebranded OnDigital as ITV Digital, insisting that ITV could become the UK’s dominant pay-TV force.

More recently, he has hit out at the government for its lack of support for ITV Digital in its ill-fated battle for subscribers with Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Digital.
