Jackson left last year to join USA Networks but is understood to be unhappy there after his high-profile role in the UK.
Headhunters Gill Carrick are reported to have said that Jackson is interested in having discussions about the job of chief executive of ITV, following the resignation of Stuart Prebble who quit following the collapse of ITV Digital.
ITV had thought it was close to signing Channel 5 chief executive Dawn Airey, who was snatched away at the last minute when she took up the offer to become managing director of Sky Networks.
Jackson's name is the latest to be linked to the job. Last week Michael Grade, another former boss of Channel 4 whom Jackson succeeded, was mooted as a possibility.
Grade is head of Pinewood-Shepperton film studios and National Lottery operator Camelot. He spend nine years at Channel 4 before leaving in 1997, and was known for developing quality dramas, as well as making Channel 4 financially successful.
However, Grade quickly dismissed speculation that he was interested in the ITV job.
Other reports at the weekend have suggested that the ITV job will go to an internal candidate. At the moment, ITV is being run by joint managing directors Mick Desmond and Clive Jones. The station appears to be experiencing a ratings renaissance recently with the success of shows such as 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' and 'Popstars: The Rivals'.
ITV is also trying to replace its director of programmes David Liddiment, who quit shortly after Prebble. However, it is unlikely this post would be filled before a new chief executive can be identified.
