The deal, in the pipeline since November, will see Blinkx provide the platform to distribute and monetise ITN's online video clips, accessible on ITN.co.uk. Video news will also be searchable on Blinkx's own web site (www.blinkx.tv).
ITN produces about 20 video clips for its web site every day, including news, sport and finance content. These will now be streamed via Blinkx's platform.
Each time a user launches a clip, a video ad will play at the start, which cannot be skipped. This will be linked to a banner ad within the player, which viewers can click to interact or find out more. Sales will be shared between ITN and Blinkx, representing the first time that the search engine has raised advertising revenue.
Suranga Chandratillake, co-founder and chief technology officer at Blinkx, said the ads would initially come from multiple sources such as ad-serving firm Eyeblaster, with whom it has a deal. But, Blinkx is also looking into selling ads directly.
Nicholas Wheeler, managing director of ITN Multimedia, said the deal enabled ITN to "extend the reach of our news and entertainment content further".
Blinkx said it was also in talks with other broadcasters, with a view to signing similar deals.
