ITC investigates complaints
The Independent Television Commission is investigating more than 200 complaints that a TV ad for Wrigley's Excite gum is offensive. The ad, created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, shows a young man lying on a sofa, looking the worse for wear after a heavy night out. He leans over as if to vomit and a paw comes out of his mouth, followed by a scruffy grey dog. The dog barks at him until the man puts Excite in his mouth and it disappears. The strapline is 'Avoid dog breath'. The ad was passed by the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre, which stipulated it should not be screened during childrens' programmes. Wrigley responded that millions of people had watched the ad, but it had only received a few complaints, adding that it was difficult to please everyone and still produce an ad that has great impact.
